The BABS Speaker Series takes place twice a month to provide an additional discussion and educational opportunitiy for the Bloomington community on issues that affect families with babies and toddlers.

Come hear Erin Bentley Wyatt, MSN, RN, OCNŽ, CBCN, CLS, as she kicks off World Breastfeeding Week. She will be talking about breastfeeding's role in preventing breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and helping to curb childhood obesity, with obesity being a known risk factor for several cancers. This will be a great time to learn how breastfeeding benefits women and to hear all the amazing powers of breastmilk.

Nature can be a powerful tool for develping the mind, imagination, and senses from brith forward. Join Monique Philpot of The Wild Nature Project on August 18th at 11am to learn how and why exposure to nature can contribute to the wholistic development of your child. In this talk we will learn about nature connection, sensory awareness, children's universal passions, and how to use these with children.

Shaken Baby Syndrome: The Tragedy of Non-Accidental Head Trauma

Sharon Aikman, RN, from Bloomington Hospital, will be presenting "Shaken Baby Syndrome: The Tragedy of Non-Accidental Head Trauma." Sharon and her husband have fostered a shaken baby and know first hand the problems that come with this preventable tragedy. During this talk, Sharon will share information on how we might help prevent this abuse and neglect. While it is extremely difficult to face this tragic type of abuse, it is important we talk about it so that hopefully we can help another parent or caregiver to use other ways of dealing with the frustration that comes with caring for a baby or small child.

This will be a great talk for any expectant parent, parent or caregiver to learn about this preventable tragedy. Call BABS for more info.

How Safe is Your Child Saftey Seat?

Nichole Blackwell, Certified Child Passenger Safety Instructor and owner of Car Seat Coach, LLC will be presenting "7 out of 10 are installed incorrectly...is your Child Safety Seat installed correctly?"  on Sunday, September 5 at 3pm at Bloomington Area Birth Services. She'll be covering top installation and selection errors, and then you will have the opportunity to ask questions about car seat safety. It'll be a great learning opportunity where you can walk away with helpful safety information. This is a free presentation and is part of our Speaker Series.
